The opening night of the capstone show was absolutely exhausting. My feet hurt, my throat was sore, and my ears were ringing— but all for the best reasons. I spent the night talking nonstop, to friends and strangers alike. Everyone visiting seemed excited to be there, surrounded by the fruits of our semester-long labor. I was delighted to find that the visitors weren’t just people’s direct family and friends— there were professionals from the design community, too, eager to see our fresh ideas and design sensibilities.

As I stood there, in front of my work, I felt proud. I also felt proud of the whole class. We each chose subjects that we felt connected to, and it showed. I’m also so very happy to be finished.

Yet, there’s a part of me that knows I’m not done yet. My blog has so much potential to expand, and might be completely redesigned if I really pursue it. I also saw small typographic mistakes in my print work, and I knew that if I want to send it off to be used freely by a nonprofit, I would have to fix them.

Website!

tenacity-mke.com

I just decided to buy the domain name. It was all over my print work— so I just spent the $14 and got it. It’s still not linked up totally correctly, and I’ll have to correct that. But it’s there!!

Showing off my final timeline and the vase with flowers inside!

Photos of the vase’s final 3D form.

New design for the front & back covers of my timeline. The front echos the three rectangles on my vase, and also continues the ribbon theme.

I’m still thinking about darkening the red a bit so that it’s not so vibrant— I just haven’t yet.

This looks like it’s done by a skilled designer— she shows you how you can beautifully implement her code into your site.

Here is a snapshot from the leftmost side of the timeline— that’s Alice Paul, who is toasting the federal passing of women’s right to vote. It’s kind of the “title page” of the poster.

The bottom two are the front and back “covers”. Because this is a timeline and not so much a book, I can work more freely with the covers and allude to what’s inside instead of explicitly explaining it. (At the showcase, people are going to see the inside before seeing the cover, so that’s why I think I can do this. I could just put this logo of sorts on the outside, instead, if you guys think I should be more explicit about the contents. Thoughts?)

Timeline in-progress. It’s not even close to being finished, but I thought you guys might want to see where it’s headed. The size is 10” x 48” and the smallest type is 8pt. I’m not ready for a picky critique, but I’m open to any ideas you guys have about the direction of this.

This is where I’ve come to for my identity. The serifed font is Clarendon and the sans-serif if Avenir. This branding will be used primarily on my website, but the mark will also be lasered into my 3D object. I still need to choose between the two typefaces.

The idea of having a high and a low opening in a vase is inspiring to me— it’s beautiful, practical, and makes a simple shape more intriguing. I will probably be working with flat, geometric shapes for my vase, so I’m looking for ways to make it more exciting.
